What Is a Gobie Water Bottle?
If you are a fan of the show Shark Tank, you may know about the Gobie Water Bottle. The inventors of this innovative bottle appeared on the show seeking funding for their product. The sharks liked the water bottle for a variety of reasons. Most significantly, they appreciated the creator’s goal to reduce waste by encouraging consumers to drink filtered water from reusable containers.
Engineer Rusty Allen worked with Distinctive Plastics to develop the Gobie water bottle. The bottle relies on a smart design to filter tap water. It doesn’t, however, use an environmentally-unfriendly filter. Instead, the bottle features a biodegradable and compostable filter made from charred coconut shells to remove chlorine, odors and other unwanted contaminants from tap water.
The Gobie Water bottle is simple to use. Because the container has a wide mouth, users can quickly and easily fill the bottle with water directly from the tap. The wide-mouth design also allows cold-water drinkers to throw in a few ice cubes without making a mess. When the bottle is full, the lid screws on using well-designed threads.
You don’t have to worry about spills with the Gobie water bottle. The bottle features a non-slip base that doesn’t allow condensation to accumulate. Additionally, the Gobie water bottle fits securely in most cup holders, whether they are in a vehicle or on a treadmill. Even better, it has a soft exterior, which makes squeezing it possible. This, of course, facilitates a steady stream of filtered water directly into your mouth.
While some water bottles have an annoying pop-up dispenser, the Gobie doesn’t. On the contrary, this water bottle has an ergonomic lid that is simple to open and close. It also has a finger loop, which allows you to hold the bottle when you are hiking or using a personal electronic device.
The overall design of the Gobie water bottle is elegant. The bottle is made from clear plastic, allowing anyone to see how much water remains inside. Blue and white writing are neat and easy to read. Unfortunately, though, the company that makes the Gobie water bottle is no longer in business.

That is, you don’t have to worry about the negative health consequences associated with BPA-rich products when you use this bottle. Instead, you drink filtered water that has a crisp, refreshing taste.
Those who care about the environment find the Gobie water bottle appealing. Not only does the container allow you to avoid purchasing throwaway plastic bottles, but it also has a filter to remove unwanted contaminants from tap water. As you probably know, though, many water filters aren’t environmentally sustainable. The Gobie filter is. Made from charred coconut shells, the carbon filter in the Gobie water bottle is compostable. It also has a long life, allowing you to filter about 100 gallons of water before changing the filter. For most drinkers, the filter lasts about three months.
The Gobie water bottle is easy to clean. You don’t have to stand at the sink and scrub this bottle. On the contrary, the Gobie is dishwasher-safe. Simply place the bottle and its lid on the top rack of your dishwasher and let the machine do the work for you.
The Gobie water bottle, designed to integrate seamlessly into the active lifestyle of users, has some cool features. Its soft body allows you to squeeze water without tipping the container to an unnatural or uncomfortable position. Moreover, the bottles spill-proof dispenser and bottom help keep everything in your gym bag dry.
While the Gobie water bottle is perfect for athletes and active users, it has a place in everyone’s cabinet. If you are like most, you aren’t in love with the taste of tap water. The Gobie helps you stay hydrated while drinking tasty filtered water. This, perhaps, is the best feature of the Gobie water bottle.
Gobie Water Bottle Pricing
As mentioned, the company that makes the Gobie water bottle is no longer in business. As such, you can’t buy the bottle from the manufacturer. Instead, you must try to find one through a third-party vendor, such as Amazon or eBay. Therefore, pricing for the bottle may vary wildly.
You also may not be able to locate a Gobie water bottle for purchase. When we wrote this review, there were no Gobie bottles available on Amazon. We couldn’t find a new or used one on eBay either. Nonetheless, some seller may list a Gobie bottle in the future, so you may have to diligently search third-party sites to snatch yours if it becomes available.
As you may suspect, because the company is no longer in business, you may have difficulty finding replacement filters. Again, when we wrote this review, we couldn’t find any filters on sale anywhere. That is hugely disappointing, as the bottle’s many features are hard to beat.
How Gobie Water Bottle Compare to Other Water Bottles
Since tracking down a Gobie water bottle may be impossible, we want you to know about some competitors. In this section, we discuss a few popular water bottles that have filters. Unlike the Gobie water bottle, all of the bottles in this section are currently available for purchase online. The same is true for each bottle’s replacement filters.

For years, Brita has been a leader in the water filtration industry. The company is perhaps best known for its filtering pitchers. Nonetheless, Brita has a way to drink filtered water on the go. The Brita 23.7-ounce hard-sided water bottle with filter is an excellent bottle.
This bottle holds 23.7 fluid ounces of water. It has a wide-mouth design to facilitate quick and easy filling and emptying. Moreover, the bottle’s pop-up dispenser is simple to open and intuitive to use. The bottle is also BPA-free and dishwasher safe.
Unfortunately, the Brita bottle’s filter does not last as long as the Gobie filter. In fact, you must replace it after filtering 40 gallons of water. Most consumers drink 40 gallons of water in about two months. The bottle also doesn’t have a squeezable design. Instead, you must tip the bottle to drink its contents.

Perhaps the best water bottle with a filter on the market today comes from GRAYL. The company’s ultralight water purifier bottle allows you to turn virtually any freshwater source into drinkable water. In fact, the bottle removes more than 99.99 percent of bacteria, viruses, protozoa and other unwanted contaminants from drinking water.
The GRAYL bottle fits inside a grippable outer casing. When you want to filter water, you simply press down after filling the container. The GRAYL product does not, however, have a finger loop or clip. As such, you should expect to carry the bottle inside a backpack or bag.
Pros and Cons of a Gobie Water Bottle
Most consumers buy bottled water because they don’t like the taste of tap water. The Gobie water bottle makes drinking tap water a pleasure. The bottle’s filter removes chlorine, bad tastes and foul odors from the water, leaving you with a crisp, refreshing drink that goes down easily. Additionally, the filter is easy to change. Simply unscrew the filter after three months’ worth of use and replace it.
We like the squeezable design of the Gobie water bottle quite a bit. Unlike many other water bottles that have a hard-sided design, the Gobie is squeezable. Accordingly, you don’t have to tip the bottle to use it. Instead, merely squeeze the side to deliver a steady, constant stream of filtered water. If you do put your mouth to the dispenser, you interact with an ergonomic part.
If you have paid attention to environmental news reports in recent years, you know the planet has a plastic crisis. Disposable plastic bottles are accumulating in landfills, open spaces and oceans. When you switch to a reusable bottle, you immediately help to reduce waste. The Gobie bottle goes one step further. The filter on this bottle is biodegradable. As such, when you toss a used one into the garbage, you know it won’t be around for years. You can also compost the filter.
While we appreciate the charred coconut shell filter that goes inside the Gobie water bottle, you may not like having to replace it periodically. Still, overusing the filter is dangerous. If you don’t want to replace filters, look for a bottle that uses a different filtering process. Or, opt for a regular bottle that you can fill with pre-filtered water. Remember, though, the Gobie filter lasts for nearly three months.
Of course, the biggest con of the Gobie water bottle is its availability. Since the company is no longer in business, finding a Gobie bottle may be nearly impossible. Locating replacement filters may be even more difficult. Also, because the company is no longer making Gobie water bottles, you may have to pay an unreasonable price for one. That is, there is no way to control cost with this product.
The Verdict: If You Can Find One, the Gobie Water Bottle Is a Great Bottle
Overall, the Mavea Elemaris XL is an excellent water filter pitcher. It gets really good reviews from users. The biggest complaints about the pitcher most often are due to not reading and following the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Some people had issues with the handle breaking or cracks forming that allowed water to leak, which is largely an issue with the plastic used to make the pitcher and how it reacts to the temperature changes when stored in the refrigerator. Avoid this easily by keeping the pitcher on the counter. Beyond that, this pitcher is said to be very easy to use and has a great design that eliminates common issues, such as difficulty pouring or filling. It also seems to stand up well when it comes to reducing the impurities in water.
The bottom line here is that this Mavea water filter pitcher is highly recommended. It is user-friendly and the design was well thought out. It blows away similar pitchers when it comes to how easy it is to use and how well it functions.
